Evans Slams Possible Takeover of Internet by Federal Government

9/11/2009

CUMMING, Ga. -- Mike Evans, Republican candidate for Georgia's Ninth Congressional District, on Saturday denounced legislation introduced in the U.S. Senate by Democrat Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia that gives the President the power to unplug Americans' private computers during a "cyber security emergency."

"This administration has hijacked the nation's auto industry, the banks, the insurance companies and is in the process of nationalizing health care," Evans said. "Now it wants to unplug Americans' private computers and deny citizens the right to free speech."

Sections of the bill call for a federal certification program for "cyber security professionals," and a requirement that certain "critical" computer systems and networks be managed by people who have been awarded a license by the federal government. But the bill fails to define what it means by critical infrastructure or network and there is no provision for an administrative process or review.

In other words, Evans said, if your company is deemed "critical" the federal government will have the right to dictate who private businesses can hire, what information you must disclose, and when government can exercise control over your computers or network.

"This is another blatant attempt by this administration and the Democrat majority to stifle dissent at any cost," Evans said. "We've seen this at town hall meetings where Democrats and the liberal media attempt to intimidate our citizens and silence any criticism. There is nothing radical liberals will not do to grab power and facilitate their march toward socialism."

Evans called on Republicans to stand strong in opposition to the bill and urged private citizens to continue to express their outrage at town hall meetings, Tea parties and on the Internet despite the administration's efforts to silence them.

"I'm fed up, but I will not give up. When elected, I will stand strong and I will not allow the voice of the 9th District to be silenced by President Obama, Pelosi or any of these radical liberals," said Evans.
