Evans Pushes for Leadership to Save Our Water

10/22/2009

(Cumming) - Mike Evans, Republican candidate for the 9th Congressional District in Georgia, called on the Governors and the House and Senate members from Georgia, Alabama and Florida to meet immediately and agree on legislative language that can be passed by Congress enacting a reasonable compromise on water withdrawals from Lake Lanier.

Said Evans, "This is the water I drink every day and the water my family and neighbors need. It doesn't get much more important than that. One of my opponents called the ruling 'troubling'. Statements like this show how ridiculously out of touch he is with the everyday needs of Forsyth and Hall County families. This situation is truly scary for every family and every homeowner in these counties and the surrounding areas. It requires immediate, serious and bold leadership."

"The federal court ruling Friday will literally shut off Forsyth County's water, slash Hall County's water usage back to 1970s levels, and have a devastating impact on water availability for hundreds of thousands of people in north Georgia if Congress fails to act in the next three years. It should not take three years to avoid a catastrophe."

"I applaud Governor Perdue for appealing the ruling, showing a willingness to continue to negotiate, and our congressional delegation for their quick action. However, this situation calls for more action by all the leaders involved. I am asking the Governors and the Senate and House members from Georgia, Alabama, and Florida to meet immediately and work out a reasonable compromise that respects each state's needs and protects the water vital to the families of north Georgia, especially Forsyth and Hall Counties."
"If they have not met and resolved this situation by January 2011, then Congressman Mike Evans will call the meeting on day one and fight to make this issue the top priority for these delegations."
