Evans Launches Petition Drive to Save Hall & Forsyth Water
10/22/2009
(Cumming) - Mike Evans, Republican candidate for the 9th Congressional District, launched a website today to help families in Hall and Forsyth Counties to join the fight to protect their water.
The websites, www.SaveHallWater.com and www.SaveForsythWater.com, allow citizens to sign an online petition that Evans will personally deliver to Congress demanding action to protect our water rights.
On July 17th, federal Judge Paul Magnuson issued a stunning ruling that Georgia, and specifically families in Hall and Forsyth Counties, do not have any legal right to withdraw water from Lake Lanier for drinking water purposes.
According to the ruling, Congress has three years to change the law governing Lake Lanier and allow use for drinking water or else Forsyth County will have its water completely shut off and Hall County will see its water supply reduced by 60% or more.
Said Evans, "The consequences of this ruling for our families, our property values, and our entire way of life could be devastating.
"Currently, our Governor is trying to work out a deal with Florida and Alabama to end this water war. Governor Perdue deserves a lot of credit for his aggressive leadership here. Yet, even if the states agree, the federal court is mandating action by Congress and that is no easy task to accomplish.
"Our current congressman, Nathan Deal, is already working hard to lay the groundwork for congressional action, but this will take a lot of time. Deal is running for Governor and will pass the torch to someone else to finish the job."
